What started as a kind gesture has now become a business for one Shenandoah woman.
Kim Bergen, the owner of Heavenly Home Bakery, began baking about six years ago but didn’t realize at the time it would lead to opening a bakery. She said it all started by making cupcakes for friends.
“They said they were so good I should go into business,” said Bergen.
Bergen is a self-taught baker, and after tasting and seeing her beautifully decorated treats, it is apparent she has found her true calling.
As Bergen started receiving more and more orders, she and her husband Joe started talking about opening a bakery about a year and a half ago. They began by cleaning out a building that sat behind their house, which has now been remodeled and converted into Heavenly Home Bakery.
“I think God was just directing me to,” said Bergen.” I thought it would be a good time to step out in faith.”
Bergen said she enjoys being creative, and it is fulfilling knowing she can make someone’s day special with her creations.
“I try to make their ideas come to life,” Bergen said.
She also enjoys making new things and said if anyone has special requests, she will do her best to accommodate them.
Pre-order items available at Heavenly Home Bakery will be cakes, cupcakes, cookies, bread, pies and muffins. Bergen currently requests orders be placed a week before when needed but said as business picks up, the earlier you can place your order, the easier it will be to accommodate your needs.
Three days a week, Bergen will offer pre-baked items you can swing by and pick up without pre-ordering. There will be muffin Monday’s, cinnamon roll Wednesday’s and bread on Friday’s.
Bergen also suggested watching the business Facebook page as she will occasionally post items for sale there too that are baked and ready to pick up.
With the grand opening a little over a week away, Bergen said she had been surprised this month with how much the business has already started to pick up even though she is not open full time yet.
Bergen said she is very excited to be able to provide this service in Shenandoah. Heavenly Home Bakery will also offer delivery and after-hours pickup.
The grand opening of Heavenly Home Bakery is set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Jan. 2. Located at 807 W. Summit Ave., the business is located behind the house, and parking is available in the alley.
Orders can be placed by phone at 712-215-0083 or through the business Facebook page Facebook.com/Heavenly-Home-Bakery.
