Nishna Productions, Inc., which provides supports and services to individuals with disabilities in Page, Montgomery, Mills and Fremont Counties, was recently awarded its tenth consecutive 3-Year Accreditation Award by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, which is a nationally-recognized accrediting authority.

The Programs and services surveyed included: Community Employment Services (Job Development and Job Coaching), Community Housing, Community Integration (Day Habilitation), Employment Planning Services, Organizational Employment Services (Sheltered Work & Community-Based Work crews), Respite Services, & Supported Community Living Services.

Accreditation means that Nishna Productions, Inc. has met a series of required standards in various areas, which include but are not limited to the following: Leadership, Governance, Strategic Planning, Risk Management, Input from Persons Served & Others, Financial Management, Health & Safety, Human Resources, Technology, Rights of Persons Served, Performance Improvement, Individual-Centered Service Planning, Design, & Delivery, Medication Management, Employment Planning Services, Supported Living Services, & Community Integration.

Three Surveyors living in other states completed the three-day survey process. They reviewed written policies & procedures, interviewed individuals receiving services & their families, & funders. They visited service sites including agency-owned facilities & small residential sites spread throughout the four-county area. They met with agency staff and employers and businesses within the four-county area, where individuals with disabilities have been hired as employees of those businesses.

Every CARF survey for Nishna Productions, Inc. has resulted in recommendations or areas in need of further development. This particular survey was no different. The agency has areas to work on. The agency also has numerous strengths in the provision of services to individuals with disabilities. One of the agency’s greatest strengths lies in its commitment to promoting the rights of the persons served. As stated by representatives of the organizations funding sources, “Nishna is the best provider in Southwest Iowa, and perhaps the state, in promoting rights and choices for the persons they work with. They are always proactive and ahead of the curve when a rights issue arises” and “The thing that sets Nishna apart (from other providers) is their passion for preserving the rights of the persons served by their organization.

In an EXIT Interview with Sherri Clark, Executive Director at Nishna Productions, Inc., the CARF Surveyors closed the interview with the following comments: “If we were looking for a job, we would want to work at Nishna Productions, Inc. If we were legally responsible for an individual with disabilities, we would want he/she to receive their services from Nishna Productions, Inc.”
