Since October is Pork Month, I wanted to share some fun facts about the pork industry here in our great state of Iowa. Iowa is the top pork producing state, with nearly 31 MILLION pigs raised annually in Iowa! Some people may have the conception that these big barns you see alongside the road are “factory farms,” but are more than likely owned and operated by family farms. In fact, 94% of Iowa hog farms are family owned and operated. Hog farming is a major contributor to our country’s economy as it contributes $5 billion yearly! Just think how many jobs are supported by all the different aspects of the pork industry. So just remember when you drive by a hog barn to remember that that farmer is feeding the world and providing jobs. Have a nice pork chop in honor of Pork Month!
