Shenandoah senior Jacob McGargill earned his third Hawkeye 10 Conference Wrestling Tournament championship Saturday, Jan. 31, at Glenwood.
The Mustangs finished fourth in the team race with 137.5 points, well behind champion Lewis Central’s 259.5, Glenwood’s 233 and Atlantic’s 198. Creston finished fifth with 125 points. Clarinda ended 10th with 43 points.
McGargill pinned both of his opponents to win the 165-pound title, beating St. Albert’s Micah Hutchison in 38 seconds in the semifinals and Dreven Smith of Atlantic in 2:21 in the final.
Shenandoah’s Hayden Roush also made the final, losing by a 15-12 decision, in a match he trailed in 14-0, to Lewis Central’s Mandius Volentine. Roush pinned his first two opponents, including a second period fall over Brodrick Phelps of Creston in the semifinals.
Carter Wooten finished third and Lukus Major and Tyler Babe both finished fourth for the Mustangs.
Wooten opened with a quarterfinal pin at 113 before losing by fall in 57 seconds to Glenwood’s Quinn Lane in a semifinal. Wooten came back with a pair of first period pins in consolation play, including over Atlantic’s Hunter Kinzie in the third-place match.
Major won his quarterfinal match by third period fall at 157 but then lost by second period fall to Atlantic’s Jayden Harter in the semifinals. Major won a 14-7 decision in a consolation semifinal before losing to Creston’s Jose Avila, who he beat in the quarterfinals, by a 10-2 major decision in the third-place match.
Babe won his quarterfinal match at 175 by first period fall but then lost by 16-1 technical fall in the second period to Denison’s Javier Medina in the semifinals. Babe won a 15-8 decision in a consolation semifinal before losing by fall to Cohen Hamilton of St. Albert in the third-place match.
Fisher Graves led Clarinda with a third-place finish at 106. He didn’t have a match until the semifinals, losing by third period fall to Dayton Van Horn of Atlantic. Graves pinned his final two opponents, both in the second period, including beating Carson Lindsey of Lewis Central in the third-place match.
Brayden Tillman was Clarinda’s next best finisher, placing fourth at 165. He lost by fall in the quarterfinals before winning twice, both by first period fall, in consolation. He lost by 16-0 technical fall in the second period to Lewis Central’s Koltin Volentine in the third-place match.
Clarinda’s Gregor Hughes won a match and finished fifth at 120. Hunter Williams at 113 and Timber Miller at 126 won one match each to finish seventh.
Chase Barker (138), Emmett Comer (150), Will Sump (175), Kamden Williams (190) and Gabe Hansen (215) were also in the field for Clarinda and all went 0-2.
Charlie Liles won four matches at 190 and Landon Fuller three matches at 215, both finishing fifth for Shenandoah. Liles earned three pins and a technical fall and Fuller three pins.
Blake Burdorf won two matches, both by fall, to finish sixth at 150 for the Mustangs. Aiden Dinges finished eighth without winning a match at 138.
Shenandoah, Southwest Iowa at Atlantic
Shenandoah senior Tyler Babe won his 100th career match as part of a 1-2 day for Shenandoah boys wrestling Thursday, Jan. 29, at Atlantic.
The host Trojans won all three matches, beating the Mustangs and St. Albert to finish an undefeated 10-0 in Hawkeye 10 Conference duals this season.
Southwest Iowa was also in the field and lost to all three.
Shenandoah’s only win was a 48-35 triumph over Southwest Iowa while they lost 63-15 to the Trojans and 37-36 on tiebreaking criteria to St. Albert.
Southwest Iowa lost 75-6 to Atlantic and 48-35 to St. Albert.
Hayden Roush, Jacob McGargill and Babe were all 3-0 on the day for Shenandoah with McGargill pinning all three of his opponents, Babe earning two pins and taking a forfeit and Roush winning by fall, by decision and by forfeit.
Shenandoah’s Landon Fuller and Southwest Iowa’s Paxton Campbell both won two matches on the mat.
The Mustangs won five of seven contested matches against the Warriors with Roush, Lukus Major, McGargill and Fuller all winning by first period fall. Blake Burdorf earned a second period fall.
Campbell picked up a 16-1 third period technical fall at 138 pounds and Evan Lang won by first period fall for Southwest Iowa.
Shenandoah’s Babe, Charlie Liles and Will Berning took forfeits. Max Mount, Otto Wederquist, Konnor Ward and Aaden Luke took forfeits for Southwest Iowa.
Shenandoah won four of seven contested matches against St. Albert, but the Falcons won the dual on the fifth tiebreak, most forfeits.
McGargill, Babe and Liles all won by first period fall and Fuller by second period fall for Shenandoah.
Roush and Carter Wooten took forfeits, but St. Albert won two matches by first period fall, one by injury default and took three forfeits.
McGargill and Babe won by fall in Shenandoah’s dual against Atlantic with McGargill’s win coming in the second period and Babe’s in the third. Roush also won, earning an 8-2 decision over Carter Hadley at 144.
Atlantic earned five pins, a technical fall, a major decision and took four forfeits.
Southwest Iowa’s only win against Atlantic was by forfeit and was taken by Nash Moreland at 150.
The Trojans won six matches by fall, one by technical fall, one by major decision and took five forfeits against the Warriors.
Campbell was the only Warrior to win a match on the mat in the St. Albert dual, and he did it in convincing fashion with a 21-5 technical fall in the second period over Olee Messinger at 138.
Mount, Lang, Wederquist, Blake Schaaf and Flynt Bell all took forfeits.
St. Albert won three matches by fall and took five forfeits.
Shenandoah ends the dual season at 23-10 overall and 6-4 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. Their dual season ends without a regional duals berth for the first time in three years. Southwest Iowa falls to 7-17.
Southwest Iowa at Home Tournament
Evan Lang finished third at 113 pounds, leading Southwest Iowa boys wrestling to an eighth-place finish Saturday, Jan. 31, at their home tournament, held Saturday at Fremont-Mills.
The Warriors scored 57 points in the 11-team field. Interstate 35 edged Logan-Magnolia 227.5 to 217 to win the team title. Woodbine was a distant third with 159.5 points.
Lang didn’t wrestle until the semifinals, where he lost by second period fall to Nik Bell of Interstate 35. Lang then pinned Bergan Catholic’s Craig Steel in the third-place match.
Max Mount (106), Aaden Luke (126) and Flynt Bell (157) all finished fifth for the Warriors. Bell and Luke won two matches each, both by fall, and Mount one by fall.
Paxton Campbell won his quarterfinal by fall for Southwest Iowa before losing three straight by medical forfeit, to place sixth at 138.
Otto Wederquist was also sixth for the Warriors, but didn’t win a match at 120. Justin Bartholomew (150) and Ethan Countryman (157) were also in the field for the Warriors, both finishing 0-2.
Southwest Iowa at Underwood
Paxton Campbell had a 3-0 day, including two wins by fall, leading Southwest Iowa boys wrestling in an 0-3 day Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Underwood.
The Warriors lost 44-30 to the host Eagles, 69-9 to Logan-Magnolia and 50-24 against Audubon.
Campbell and Evan Lang earned contested wins in the Underwood dual with Campbell winning in 1 minute, 27 seconds at 138 pounds and Ward earning a first period fall at 113.
Konnor Ward, Justin Bartholomew and Ethan Countryman took forfeits for Southwest Iowa.
Max Mount and Garret Thompson went the distance against Underwood, but neither was close to winning. Mount lost 9-0 to Wyatt Durick at 106 and Thompson dropped a 15-4 major decision against Sam Taylor at 215.
Campbell and Aaden Luke won contested matches against Logan-Magnolia. Campbell earned a second period fall at 138 and Luke won by 11-6 decision over Noah Archibald at 126.
The Panthers won five matches by fall and three by technical fall. They also took four forfeits.
All Southwest Iowa’s wins against Audubon were by forfeit and were taken by Campbell, Blake Schaaf, Bartholomew and Countryman.
The Wheelers won five matches on the mat with Ward coming closest to a win for the Warriors, losing a 9-6 decision at 120 to Bentley Strasser.
