Iowa Primary Care Association planning funding sessions in Walnut, Shenandoah
Scott Stewart
The Iowa Primary Care Association is planning technical assistance sessions in Walnut and Shenandoah to help organizations prepare for upcoming Iowa Department of Health and Human Services funding opportunities.
A school-based technical assistance session will be offered 9 a.m. to noon in Shenandoah on June 30 and in Walnut on July 1. A general co-location technical assistance session will be offered 1 to 4 p.m. in Shenandoah on June 30 and in Walnut on July 1.
The sessions will prepare organizations for upcoming Iowa HHS requests for proposals, which are expected later this summer as part of the Healthy Hometowns initiative through Iowa’s Rural Health Transformation Program, according to a news release.
The Healthy Hometowns initiative aims to bring healthcare and related services together to make them more accessible for rural Iowans.
Potential participants could include, but are not limited to, public health agencies, community health centers, rural health clinics, hospitals, behavioral health organizations, oral health providers, schools, pharmacies, nutrition organizations, substance use treatment programs and other healthcare or social service organizations, the release states.
“Rural communities deserve care that is coordinated, accessible, and built around the realities of daily life,” Aaron Todd, CEO of the Iowa Primary Care Association, said in the release. "Co-located and school-based services are about making it easier for Iowans to get the right support in the right place — in one location — so fewer people fall through the cracks."

Iowa Master Conservationist Program coming soon to Mills, Fremont counties
Scott Stewart
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer the Iowa Master Conservationist Program later this summer in Mills and Fremont counties.
Landowners, farmers, community leaders, gardeners and anyone interested in Iowa’s natural resources are welcome to participate in the program, which runs Aug. 4 through Sept. 15, according to a news release.
The program, which includes seven meetings, provides hands-on learning on Iowa's diverse natural resources. Participants will learn about natural ecosystems and conservation challenges. Graduates will be able to make informed choices for how to lead and educate others to improve conservation in the state.
More than 800 Iowans have completed the program. Adam Janke, extension wildlife specialist with Iowa State, said in the release the program encourages building local conservation leaders.
“We need people out there talking to their friends and neighbors about what conservation is, what it takes and why everybody needs to be involved,” Janke said in the release. “This curriculum brings people together in nature, in the classroom, to learn and build skills that they can use in conversations with friends and neighbors.”
The in-person meetings will be held throughout Mills and Fremont counties from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. They will be led by local conservation professionals and build upon online coursework. Locations will include Folsom Point, Wearin Prairie, Pierce Creek, East Nishnabotna River, and Blackburn State Park.
Registration costs $75. To sign up, call the Mills County office at 712-624-8616 or the Fremont County office at 712-374-2351 or visit go.iastate.edu/TCSF1R. Up to 25 participants will be able to join. Register by July 24.
