Southwest Iowa Wrestling
Bedford edged Southwest Iowa boys wrestling 42-36 Thursday giving the Bulldogs the conference championship at the Corner Conference Dual Tournament, held at Bedford.
The Bulldogs beat East Mills 48-12 and Griswold 36-24 to secure the title. Southwest Iowa beat East Mills 48-12 and downed Griswold 42-30, finishing second.
Five Warriors finished 3-0 on the day but between those five there were just five contested matches and three of them belonged to Nash Moreland.
He won all three of his matches by fall, pinning Bedford’s Bryson Cavin and Quinton Wilson of Griswold in the first period at 157 pounds. Moreland was also on the mat at 150 for a second period pin of East Mills’ Landon Gibbs.
Flynt Bell and Garret Thompson also won matches in the Griswold dual, with Bell pinning Gunner Amos in the second period at 165 and Thompson pinning Jaden Jensen in the third period at 215. For both Thompson and Bell, this was their only match in a 3-0 day.
Max Mount, Evan Lang, Otto Wederquist and Ayden Luke all took forfeits, something Lang and Luke did in the other duals as well.
The Warriors and Bulldogs had just four competitive matches that the two teams split. Max Mount and Otto Wederquist lost by fall at 113 and 126 before Justin Bartholomew won by fall and 150 and Moreland’s win at 157.
Moreland’s win was the only contested match in the East Mills dual.
The Warriors ended the day with a 4-4 dual record.
Southwest Iowa Girls at Corner Dual Tournament
The Southwest Iowa girls wrestling team had just two competitive matches and finished second Thursday at the Corner Conference Dual Tournament in Bedford.
The Warriors beat East Mills 18-12 but lost 24-18 to Griswold, giving the Tigers the conference championship as the Tigers beat East Mills 13-12 on criteria.
The only competitive match in Southwest Iowa’s dual against Griswold decided it at 170 pounds as Griswold’s Abbi Henderson delivered a first period fall over Southwest Iowa’s Liz Covert.
Macy Kalhorn (105), Katie Glenn (115) and Jocelyn Tackett (135) took forfeits for the Warriors.
Kalhorn lost by third period fall in the East Mills dual to Maggie Miles-Crook at 110.
Glenn, Tackett and Covert took forfeits to give the Warriors the win over the Wolverines.
Southwest Iowa Girls at Platteview Tournament
Jocelyn Tackett was the only Southwest Iowa athlete in the field and she split four matches at 135 pounds Saturday at the Platteview Invite.
Tackett scored the six points for the Warriors, winning two consolation matches by first period fall after losing by third period fall in the quarterfinals. Tackett ended her day with an 11-1 major decision loss in a consolation semifinal.
Bellevue East rolled to the team title with 178 points, well ahead of runner-up Ralston’s 114.
Tackett’s six points put the Warriors in a tie for 17th in the 19-team field.
Southwest Iowa Boys at Glenwood Tournament
The Southwest Iowa boys wrestling team tied for 12th with 43.5 points Saturday at the Glenwood Tournament.
The host Rams won the team title with 252.5 points, beating runner-up Hinton by 22.
Ayden Luke placed fourth, Evan Lang fifth and Nash Moreland sixth at their respective weight classes for the Warriors.
Luke pinned his first two opponents at 126 before dropping a 13-4 major decision to Glenwood’s Brody Black in the semifinals. Luke won a consolation match by technical fall but then lost by a 10-2 major decision to Kaden Smith of ADM in the third-place match.
Lang won by fall in the quarterfinals at 113 before losing by second period fall to Keenan Eddy of Boys Town in a semifinal match. Lang lost his consolation semifinal by fall before winning the fifth-place match by fall.
Moreland won three matches in total at 150. He started with a win by fall but then lost by third period fall in the quarterfinals. Moreland earned a pair of first period falls in the consolation bracket to get into the consolation semifinals but lost his next two matches.
Otto Wederquist (120), Mavryc Morgan (138) and Garret Thompson (215) all finished 0-2 on the day for the Warriors.
