Fall Golf has arrived at the Shenandoah Golf Course
It's hard to believe we are already in October and fall golf has arrived. It's a great time of year to enjoy the game we all love. Here are my top five reasons I love golf in the fall. 1) Breathtaking scenery – the leaves changing colors are a sight to behold. 2) Lower expectations – any rounds completed before the cold and snow arrive are a bonus – who cares what your score is? 3) Pace of play – it is less crowded on the course later in the season and allows you to complete 18 holes in around three hours. 4) The weather – on cool mornings you might need a sweatshirt to start out with, but by the time you finish your round, the temperature is just ideal. And 5) That post-round beverage – relaxing at the 19th hole and watching some football on TV with a cold one in your hand. Perfect!!!
And, after an unseasonably rainy September, I think all of us are ready for some nice sunny fall days. We are overdue for a number of beautiful days without precipitation!
The Southwest Iowa Seniors or Wobblies had another of their events at the SGC on Monday morning, September 28. There were 23 four-person teams that participated.
Upcoming event at the SGC is the final one for 2026 – the annual Chili Bowl on Sunday, October 11. It's a four-person scramble format with lunch served afterwards at the Elm Street Grill.
What are some “On the Green” etiquette rules to follow?
1 – Repair your ball marks. When your ball lands on the green from an approach shot, it often leaves an indentation. Get in the habit of repairing your ball mark plus one extra – this helps undo the damage from players who forgot to fix theirs.
2 – Never step on another player's putting line. Walk around the line even if it means taking a longer path.
3 – Be mindful of your shadow. On sunny days, your shadow can fall across another player's putting line or over the hole. Position yourself so your shadow does not interfere with anyone else's putt.
4 – Mark your ball if it is close to another player's line. Place a coin or ball marker directly behind your ball then pick the ball up. Replace it when it is your turn to putt.
5 – After everyone in the group has holed out, leave the green promptly. This keeps the flow of play moving for the groups behind you.
Greens aerification was completed on Tuesday, October 6.

This week's golf slang dictionary term is “There's Enough Meat on That Bone to Feed a Family of Four.” And the definition is “Running a Six-foot Putt Three Feet Past the Hole, Outside Gimme Range.”
This week's golf quote from famous people is compliments of Dr. Bob Rotella. “A golfer needs to train his swing on the practice tee, then trust it on the course.”
This week's “In Years Gone By” notable event comes from just over 26 years ago on September 8, 2000. Ez Lauber had a hole-in-one on the par three 6th hole.
This week's attempt at golf humor – Every golf course restroom needs a sign that reads “Welcome to this facility – it is the only place on the grounds that nobody will try to change your stance or adjust your grip.”
The answer to last week's trivia question – Whose name is on a memorial bench on the 10th tee box? The correct answer is my dear mother, Angela Larson. This week's trivia question – Whose name is on a memorial bench on the sixth tee box? The answer to this week's trivia question will be in the next FTTG column.
