The Clarinda boys basketball team took a brief lead in the fourth quarter Monday, Feb. 16, during a Class 2A District 14 first round game at Red Oak, after trailing much of the contest.
They wouldn’t hold the lead, however, and Red Oak finished off the win at the free throw line 65-56.
Red Oak advanced to a district semifinal while Clarinda’s season ends at 8-14.
The Cardinals led 52-51 with less than three minutes to go in the game after trailing 46-37 after three quarters. Red Oak scored the next seven, however. Clarinda came down and knocked down a triple and had a shot to tie the game with just over a minute left. It didn’t go, though, and the Cardinals scored just one point the rest of the contest.
Reese Montgomery scored 23 points and hauled in 11 rebounds for the Tigers, who won their seventh straight game, improving to 12-10 on the season.
Warner Schmitt led three Clarinda athletes in double figures with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. He added seven rebounds. Sam Kline added 15 points and four rebounds while Aidan Johnson recorded 10 points and five rebounds.
Cooper Baumgart finished with seven points and seven rebounds for Clarinda. Kaiden Roop supplied four points, five rebounds and three assists. Cain Wellhausen added two points. Ryan Wagoner didn't score but recorded four assists and two rebounds.
