Golf is a sport with widespread appeal and a multitude of benefits. From the playing side to the social side, the technical to the visual – here are 10 reasons to LOVE golf.
1. The scenery and outdoors – We spend much of our time battling with others on crowded streets, airplanes, and other sporting events. Golf offers a reprieve from the “rat race”, as it's played in beautiful settings. Essentially, golf lets us breathe easy for a few hours.
2. The sense of accomplishment – There are few sports like golf which allow for so many little achievements. Making a par or birdie, striping a drive on a testing hole, or getting cleanly out of a bunker. Golf is a game of multiple challenges, which means the potential for multiple accomplishments.
3. The gear – What could beat a shiny new set of irons, a pristine pair of new golf shoes, or the latest in driver technology? Plus, there's so many adjustments you can make, such as moving the weights on your driver or trying a new brand of golf ball. Golf provides the tech lover ample scope to consider the new gear available.
4. The health benefits – Golf provides excellent exercise for players of all ages. There are mental health benefits to be had, too. Golf is a highly sociable sport and one in which great friendships are formed and kept.
5. The inclusivity – Players of all ages and abilities can enjoy the game together and even compete against one another. The GHIN handicap system allows for that. The chance to mix and share views with different people every round is a very healthy thing.
6. The camaraderie – Golf is hard and every golfer suffers his or her travails. Golfers must be thick skinned and stick together in adversity, but they can also share and enjoy each other's successes too.
7. Competition – Most of us have a little competitive streak and golf allows us to compete whenever we go out. It need not be an organized tournament; it could be just against your other members of your golf group.
8. The never-ending challenge – Golf will never be beaten; an individual will never do the very best they possibly can during a round of golf – shots will always get away. The challenge of the game is what keeps us coming back to the course time and time again.
9. Life lessons – Golf teaches patience, tolerance, dedication and perseverance. And above all integrity; golf is a game of honesty and following the rules the game demands.
10. The tournaments – The elite side of the game is extremely entertaining and exciting, with a myriad of competitions to watch and enjoy.
Golf is one of the most complete and complex sports on the planet, offering an abundance of reasons to play it, enjoy it, and love it. We golfers should count our blessings every day!
This week's golf slang dictionary term is “Requesting Permission For Re-Entry,” And the definition is “Skying Your Drive So High It Looks Like You Put It In Orbit.”
This week's golf quote from famous people is compliments of former PGA tour player, Gardner Dickinson. “They say golf is like life but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that.”
This week's “In Years Gone By” notable event comes from twenty five years ago on August 19, 2001. Steve Berning had a hole-in-one on the par three 8th hole.
This week's attempt at golf humor – Golf doesn't solve all my problems, but it's a great way to ignore them!!
The answer to last week's trivia question - What green on the SGC would most members agree is the most difficult to make a putt on? I've gotten feedback from several members on this question and I don't believe there is one correct answer. Responses ranged from #1 to #13 to #14 to #18. Each of those greens has unique features that make them challenging to putt on. Anything above the cup on #1 and you are putting defensively down a slippery slope; #13 also slopes from back to front with side hill putts being especially demanding; #14 is a two tiered green requiring a precise approach to enable you to putt on the proper level; and #18 has a crown on the green that makes it extremely difficult to judge the correct pace for a putt. This week's trivia question – What company's name is on the bridge on hole #1? The answer to this week's trivia question will be in the next FTTG column.
