For many immigrant families in Minnesota, sending a child to school requires faith that one of the thousands of federal immigration officers deployed around the state won’t detain them.
"Cameras on, masks off" has become a rallying cry among Democrats, who are also insisting the officers wear body cameras as a way to provide greater accountability and oversight of the operations.
The number of people in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention has topped 70,000 for the first time.
A review by The Associated Press found at least two dozen U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees and contractors have been charged with crimes since 2020.
Ten states now have statewide policies prohibiting law enforcement officers from cooperating in the primary programs Trump is using to carry out mass deportations.
The Trump administration says its aggressive immigration enforcement in Minnesota has improved public safety. Left in its wake, though, is a greatly weakened U.S. attorney's office.
Joshua Orta was a key witness in the shooting of Ruben Ray Martinez, a U.S. citizen killed during a traffic encounter that was not publicly disclosed for nearly 11 months.
