Top stories from this past week: What a ban on Russian oil can mean for you, ACM Awards, and more

Check out some of our top stories from the past week.

ACM Awards 2022: The winners, red carpet arrivals, Dolly Parton's tribute to Ukraine, and more

Dolly Parton recently hosted the 57th Academy of Country Music Awards alongside Jimmie Allen and Gabby Barrett. The country legend opened the show by saying that she’d “rather pass a kidney stone” than be political. However, she asked all those in attendance and those watching on Prime Video to send their “love and hope to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine”. So why don't we just dedicate this entire show to them and pray for peace around this crazy old world, Dolly Parton. While accepting the Group of the Year award Brad Tursi of Old Dominion said it felt strange to celebrate while "people are fighting for their lives”. Other winners include Miranda Lambert who won Entertainer of the Year and Chris Stapleton who won Male Artist of the Year.

Morgan Wallen won album of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards on Monday night for “Dangerous: The Double Album,” a year after he was removed from the ACMs ballot after he was caught on camera using a racial slur.

Wallen made no direct reference to the incident or his absence from recent awards shows while accepting the trophy at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, but may have dropped a hint about it.

Rural Idaho town part of trend: Conservatives seeking escape from liberal politics

Real Estate Blue to Red

A pedestrian walks past a mural, Monday, Feb. 7, 2022, in downtown Sandpoint, Idaho. The Mayor of Sandpoint and many residents worry that the trend of a growing number of real estate companies advertising to conservatives that they can help people move out of liberal bastions like Seattle and San Francisco and find homes in places like rural Idaho is not good for their community. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)

SANDPOINT, Idaho (AP) — Linda Navarre moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, from Cleveland in 1978, when the town consisted of people in the timber industry and hippies "and they all got along."

Now she barely recognizes the small resort community near the Canadian border that is quickly growing as people disenchanted with big city life move there. Many are conservatives fed up with liberal politics in blue states.

7 gas-saving tips that actually work

Drivers react as gas tops $4 per gallon

When fuel prices spike, lots of tips and tricks to save on gas get trotted out. Here are seven that don’t violate the laws of physics, compromise safety or insult your intelligence.

The price of gasoline today isn’t exceptional — well off the $3+ spikes seen in the early part of this decade. On the other hand, a gallon of regular gas is still significantly higher (when accounting for inflation) than where it was in the 1990s. Don’t let a “well, it’s been worse” mentality blind you to the fact that filling the tank is taking money out of your wallet.

7 gas-saving tips that actually work

Get junk out of the trunk

Car trunk

Car engineers spend a lot of time engineering pounds, ounces and grams out of today’s cars. Don’t undo their efforts (and the gas savings they represent) by leaving anything unnecessary in the luggage compartment. Golf clubs are a common violator, but so is random dead weight like those items slated to go to the second-hand store one of these days. Or, dear lord, a case of individual water bottles for after-workout hydration.

Every time you accelerate, you’re using gas to get that stuff up to speed with you. How much more? This depends on your car, but the EPA estimates a 1% reduction per 100 pounds. On a per-gallon cost basis, that’s about $0.03, using the EPA baseline figures. Get your stuff in order and you’ll save money, too.

Get the rack off the roof

Southwest Heat

Matt York

When they’re not worrying about the weight of their designs, auto engineers fuss over aerodynamics. Improvements to how your car cuts through the air bear fruit most at high speeds — highway miles. The most common way drivers hurt their aerodynamics, and thus mileage, is by putting items on the roof.

Do you have activities that mandate a lot of equipment? Consider whether you could use a hitch-mounted rack or box instead. Tucked in the slipstream of your car, these have a much smaller mileage penalty. And, finally, if your vehicle came with a factory roof rack that you never use, see if you can remove the crossbars. You’ll save a few pounds this way, too.

Combine your trips

Driving

Being told to group your errands sounds a bit like a nag, much like the admonition not to use the trunk as a storage locker. Still, we will repeat the reasons why planning ahead can save gas:

If grouping trips means fewer miles driven, well, that’s obvious.

Shut that puppy off

Car ignition

Americans continue to wildly overestimate how much fuel it takes to start an engine versus to keep it running. The reality is, once you’re stopped, your car is wasting fuel after about 7-10 seconds of idling. That’s why newer cars have a feature that shuts the engine off during stops when the brake is applied. The car’s still on, but the engine isn’t. Push the accelerator pedal and the engine snaps back on — off you go. Some people find this maddening, but the gas savings is real. If you want to maximize mileage, don’t disable the auto on-off feature.

Check apps and join clubs

Not Real News

Finding the cheapest fuel was once sport for me. But phone apps like GasBuddy, Gas Guru and Fuelzee make it almost too easy to find the best gas deals. Since you can use them to screen for brands, you can also make sure you’re getting good quality fuel, which, in the long run, matters to the health of your car.

Joining a membership club like Costco or Sam’s Club could also pay off. Figuring how quickly you’ll recoup your membership cost with the per-gallon savings on their discounted fuel is pretty easy math.

Don’t rely on the tire light

Car tires
Image by Hannes Edinger from Pixabay

All cars built since 2007 have tire-pressure monitoring systems. The hitch is this: The system might not alert you until a tire is 25% lower than the recommended pressure. And if you wait for that, you’re wasting money, as underinflated tires reduce your gas mileage by roughly 0.2% per pound that they’re low. That might not sound like much, but try this math: If your recommended inflation pressure is 40 psi, and you’re 25% low on air, that’s a 2% hit to your gas mileage. Plus, underinflated tires wear more quickly and unevenly, reducing your tire life.

Drive slowly wisely

No list of gas-saving tips would be complete without the admonition to slow down. There’s no getting around the fact that lower speeds require less fuel, most because aerodynamic resistance increases with the square of speed.

Ex-officer found not guilty in shooting during Breonna Taylor raid

Fired cop testifies about Breonna Taylor raid

A Kentucky jury has cleared a former police officer who fired shots during the 2020 drug raid that ended in Breonna Taylor’s death. The jury on Thursday found Brett Hankison not guilty of three counts of wanton endangerment for firing shots that ripped into a neighboring apartment.

This is a breaking news update. AP’s earlier story follows follows here:

25 great movies set on the water

“Do not shoot on water!” Steven Spielberg once warned Kevin Costner before the making of 1995’s “Waterworld.” Given Spielberg’s own troubled experiences during the production of “Jaws,” it’s safe to say he was offering sound advice. Costner swiftly ignored that advice and went on to participate in one of the biggest behind-the-scenes fiascos in movie history, complete with flooding sets and personal injuries.

Unfortunately Costner's efforts were not enough for “Waterworld” to make the following list of great movies set on the water. “Jaws” certainly did, however, as it’s easily among the most classic films to involve water in a central capacity. As either a thematic motif, perennial backdrop, or physical obstacle (or all of the above), water plays an important role in a number of acclaimed works. Today, we honor some of the best examples.

Stacker surveyed film history and compiled a list of movies across decades, countries, and genres that take place primarily on a body of water, whether on a ship, in a quiet seatown, or the current of a river. To qualify, the film had to have at least a 7.0 on IMDb. The 25 films chosen are organized alphabetically.

Jan. 6 panel claims Trump engaged in 'criminal conspiracy' to overturn election

The House Committee investigating the U.S. Capitol insurrection said Wednesday night that its evidence shows former President Donald Trump and his associates engaged in a "criminal conspiracy" to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the presidential election, spread false information about it and pressured state officials to overturn the results.

The committee made the claims in a filing in response to a lawsuit by Trump adviser John Eastman. Eastman, a lawyer who was consulting with Trump as he attempted to overturn the election, is trying to withhold documents from the committee as it investigates the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. The committee argued there is a legal exception allowing the disclosure of communications regarding ongoing or future crimes.

Watch Now: Ukraine drone hobbyists band together to spy on Russians from the air

Drones have played a different role in the war in Ukraine, used in defense and in showing the destruction.

In better times, Ukrainian drone enthusiasts flew their gadgets into the sky to photograph weddings, fertilize soybean fields or race other drones for fun.

Now some are risking their lives by forming a volunteer drone force to help their country repel the Russian invasion.

In better times, Ukrainian drone enthusiasts flew their gadgets into the sky to photograph weddings, fertilize soybean fields or race other drones for fun. Now some are risking their lives by forming a volunteer drone force to help their country repel the Russian invasion. "Kyiv needs you and your drone at this moment of fury!" read a Facebook post late last week from the Ukrainian military, calling for citizens to donate hobby drones and to volunteer as experienced pilots to operate them. One entrepreneur who runs a retail store selling consumer drones in the capital said its entire stock of some 300 drones has been dispersed for the cause. "And everybody just started to use those drones to find some enemies in our country, and it's helpful. And I know many examples where it saved the life of our Ukrainian people," said Taras Troiak, co-founder of Quadro.ua, a dealer of drones made by Chinese company DJI. Unlike the much larger Turkish-built combat drones that Ukraine has in its arsenal, off-the-shelf consumer drones like DJI's aren't much use as weapons — but they can be powerful reconnaissance tools. Troiak said civilians have been using the aerial cameras to track Russian convoys and then relay the images and GPS coordinates to Ukrainian troops. Some of the machines have night vision and heat sensors.
