As summer approaches and we’re spending more time outdoors, it’s important to know how to properly check for ticks so you don’t miss any parts of the process. Firstly, it’s important to know that ticks don’t just live in the woods. They love any grassy or brushy area too. Because of this, you should be checking for ticks more often than you might think. One way to ensure that you don’t forget to check for ticks, is by taking a shower after you’ve been outdoors. Ticks tend to crawl around for a few hours before attaching, so the chances are they will fall off in a shower. Not knowing what to do with a tick when you find one is a common mistake people make. Of course, when you find one crawling, immediately wash or brush it off. If a tick has attached, be careful when removing it. Avoid using soap or alcohol, as this can cause the tick to release stomach contents into your bloodstream and potentially make you sick. The best way to detach a tick is by using a fine-tipped tweezers and carefully removing it from your skin.
