DOJ Sets $1.7bn Anti-Weaponization Fund In Trump IRS Lawsuit

The Trump administration has announced a $1.776 billion fund to compensate individuals as part of a deal to drop President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The “Anti-Weaponization” fund is part of an agreement to settle Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax return information. The fund will be used to compensate individuals who claim they were unfairly targeted by federal law enforcement or regulatory agencies as a result of the leaked tax returns. Under the agreement, Trump and his co-plaintiffs will not receive any monetary compensation but will receive a formal apology from the government. The fund will be overseen by a five-member committee appointed by the attorney general, with authority to review claims, as well as award payments and formal apologies. 93 congressional Democrats have filed a brief with the court calling for the department to block the resolution, arguing it could function as a taxpayer-funded payout system for Trump’s allies.
