Southwest Iowa Boys Wrestling
The Southwest Iowa boys wrestling team split a double dual Thursday, Dec. 11, in Sidney, beating Griswold 50-24 and losing a tight 39-36 dual to Southwest Valley.
Evan Lang, Paxton Campbell and Kullen Ward were all 2-0 on the day for the Warriors. Campbell was the only one of the three that won two contested matches, and one was by injury default in the Southwest Valley dual. He also beat Griswold’s Alex Rasmussen by a 21-6 first period technical fall at 144 pounds.
Lang pinned Southwest Valley’s Krew Schafer in the first period at 113 and took a forfeit in the Griswold dual. Ward took two forfeits.
Blake Schaaf, Nash Moreland and Garret Thompson won contested matches for Southwest Iowa, along with Campbell, against Griswold. Moreland won by first period fall at 157, Schaaf by second period fall at 150 and Thompson in an 8-4 decision over Jaden Jensen at 215.
Lang, Konnor Ward, Otto Wederquist and Mavryc Morgan, along with Kullen Ward took forfeits.
The Warriors won four of 10 contested matches in the dual against Southwest Valley.
Along with Campbell’s win, Lang and Flynt Bell (157) won by first period fall. Max Mount earned a second period fall at 106 for the Warriors.
Kullen Ward and Bryce Winters took forfeits for the Warriors, who are now 2-3 on the dual season.
Southwest Iowa at Glenwood
The Southwest Iowa boys wrestling team took on Hawkeye 10 competition Tuesday, Dec. 9, in Glenwood and earned one win.
The Warriors beat St. Albert 41-36, lost a close one 42-35 to Harlan and fell 78-6 to the host Rams.
Evan Lang, Ayden Luke, Paxton Campbell, Blake Schaaf and Garret Thompson were all double winners on the evening for the Warriors with Schaaf and Thompson earning both of their wins on the mat.
The Warriors and Falcons split eight contested matches in the win over St. Albert.
Thompson and Flynt Bell won by first period fall at 215 and 157 pounds. Ayden Luke won by fall in the second period at 132 and Schaaf was a winner by third period technical fall 21-3 over Ryan McColloch at 150.
Campbell, Otto Wederquist and Max Mount all took forfeits for Southwest Iowa.
The Harlan dual was also even with the Warriors and Cyclones splitting 10 contested matches.
Schaaf and Thompson won by first period fall at 150 and 215. Campbell won by second period fall at 144, Konnor Ward won by third period fall at 120 and Luke earned a 19-4 technical fall in the first period over Jude Mastin at 132.
Lang took a forfeit for the Warriors.
Lang was the only winner for the Warriors against Glenwood, winning by first period fall at 113. Glenwood won the other 10 contested matches by fall, eight coming in the first period.
Southwest Iowa at Lenox Tournament
Paxton Campbell placed fourth and Flynt Bell fifth in leading Southwest Iowa boys wrestling Saturday at the Lenox Invitational.
The Warriors scored 34.5 points, placing 12th in the 12-team field. The Nodaway Valley JV was just ahead of the Warriors with 38 points. Indianola’s JV won the tournament with 197.5 points, 29 ahead of runner-up Coon Rapids-Bayard.
Campbell started the day with two wins, a 14-8 decision and a third period pin before losing by first period pin in a 144-pound semifinal to Joseph Hayes of East Union. Campbell won his consolation semifinal 9-4 before losing by first period fall to Jett Sornson of Treynor in the third-place match.
Bell opened his day with a quick fall at 157 before losing by fall in the quarterfinals. He won two of his three consolation matches, one by major decision and the other by technical fall.
Blake Schaaf won two matches for the Warriors at 150, pinning both opponents.
Konnor Ward (120), Otto Wederquist (126), Mavryc Morgan (138) and Justin Bartholomew (150) were also in the field for the Warriors.
