A soon-to-be four-year starter for the Clarinda softball team will continue to play the sport in college.
Senior Maddie Cole signed with Northwestern’s softball program Monday, April 13, during a ceremony held at Clarinda High School.
Cole said after a January visit to the NAIA school that plays in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and is located in Orange City, Iowa, everything fell into place.
“I went there and talked with the softball coaches and that’s where I needed to be,” Cole said. “I have a cousin that goes there now and another cousin going there next year for baseball and I have a lot of family there. It’s not as close to home as I would have liked but it feels closer.”
Softball is one of four sports Cole has played during her high school career and said softball has always been her favorite.
She joins head coach Shane Bouman’s team that was 24-13 on the season, as of Cole’s signing, and has qualified for three straight NAIA National Tournaments, including hosting a regional in 2024 and 2025. Cole said joining a program that has had that much success is “pretty great.”
“They’re a really good program,” Cole said, “and being able to go there and be a part of it is really awesome.”
Before Cole makes the move to Orange City, she’ll finish her softball career for Clarinda this summer. An outfield spot has her name on it for the fourth straight year, and she is hopeful for a big finish.

“I want to go out with a bang,” Cole said, “and do my best. I don’t want to get complacent just because I’m going somewhere for softball. It’s my last season and I want to make the most of it and enjoy it.”
Cole said she’s currently working on her offense, something she has been focusing on throughout the offseason, hoping to swing the bat a little better this summer in a sport she’s played since as early as Clarinda has offered it.
Cole is planning on pursuing a business and accounting degree.

Shenandoah senior Nali Green signed Friday, April 10, with the College of Saint Mary Competitive Dance.
Green did dance and gymnastics when she was young and while she has been in Shenandoah’s Cheerleading program during her high school career, Dance is something she wants to come back to.
“When I came to Shenandoah, I didn’t know they had a dance team until my junior year,” Green said. “So, I did cheerleading. I wanted to do Dance in college and after I got to talk to the dance coach, I went there for an audition.”
Saint Mary Competitive Dance Coach Jennifer Wasik was on hand for the signing, which took place at Shenandoah High School. Green said choosing the Omaha-based school checked all the boxes.
“Saint Mary showed that they have wonderful benefits,” Green said, “and they had an amazing program for the major I wanted to go into. We booked a visit and when we were done with the tour, I fell in love. I wanted it to be my temporary home.”
Green plans on majoring in Law with her current plans of becoming an attorney. She said Saint Mary offers a program where she starts there for three years and continues at Creighton for three years.
