Big crowd for SGC Kickoff event

The annual men's kickoff stag was held on Wednesday, April 15. There was golf throughout the day, followed by a meal at the Elm Street Grill in the evening. An estimated 100 golfers attended the dinner. Numerous prizes were drawn for, with Spencer Laumann winning the single golf membership, Jordan Newberg winning the annual fitness center membership, and Joe Dinville winning a new set of irons! Andy Dinges was the master of ceremonies on behalf of the golf committee. He recognized the men's 2025 club champions in the three divisions – Jay Soderberg Overall Champion; Tom Ross Senior Champion; and Trent Blackman Handicap Champion. Thanks go out to the many individual and business sponsors who made this event a huge success.
The ladies kickoff event is scheduled for Tuesday evening, May 5. There will be nine holes of golf starting at 5 p.m. followed by a meal at the Elm Street Grill. Purchase your ticket in the pro shop and be eligible for golf, dinner, and prizes including a single golf membership and fitness center membership.
Signup sheets for both men and women spring golf leagues are out in the pro shop. Both leagues will be starting soon – the men on Monday, May 4 and the ladies on Tuesday, May 12. Both leagues are two-person team play. If you haven't already signed up, find a partner and join the fun!
Upcoming events at the SGC include: 1) Iowa/Missouri Border War Event on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. Teams from Shenandoah and Savannah, Missouri will compete against each other. They will play in Shenandoah on Saturday and in Savannah on Sunday. 2) First Wednesday of the month men's stag event on May 6.
If you are in need of some affordable golf balls and don't need to play with more costly new ones, the pro shop has a deal for you! A container of used golf balls is on display on the floor along the south wall for you to choose from. Any ball in the container is yours for 50 cents! So, if you don't mind playing with slightly used golf balls, there's no sweeter deal in town.
A few friendly reminders as the weather warms up and more players are on the course. Keep golf carts at least 30' from any tee box or green. For kids coming out to play, you must be 16 years of age to drive a golf cart on the course. Please use proper golf etiquette while playing and allow faster groups to play through. There is a sign-in sheet in the pro shop for all members/non-members coming out to play. You must stop into the pro shop before starting play. There is no starting on the back nine without permission from the pro shop staff. There is to be no more than five players per group. And, if you are planning to play golf, please call ahead and reserve a tee time. Thanks for your cooperation in following these reminders.
This week's golf slang dictionary term is “Wife death wish.” And the definition is “Bury me on the golf course so my husband will come and visit.”
This week's golf quote from famous people is compliments of the great Lee Trevino. “I'm a golfaholic. And all the counseling in the world wouldn't help me.”
This week's attempt at golf humor – A recent study found that the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year, which means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind of makes you proud. I almost feel like a hybrid!
This week's “In Years Gone By” notable event comes from April 2020. And it was the hiring of Craig Connell as our golf course superintendent. Since that time, Craig and his staff have completely transformed the golf course into a layout each and every member can be proud of. Thanks Craig for all of your efforts in maintaining and improving our golf course!
The answer to last week's trivia question – Who were the men's city golf champions 25, 50, and 75 years ago (2001, 1976, and 1951)? The correct answer is Chris Barton (2001), Bernie Giese (1976), and Spike Spargur (1951). This week's trivia question – What longtime American Legion Country Club golfer popularized the phrase he uttered when it was windy during his round of golf - “When it's breezy, swing easy”? The answer to this week's trivia question will be in the next FTTG column.
