The leader of Shenandoah’s girls bowling team this winter plans to continue her bowling career collegiately.
Fillies senior Jaylan Gray signed Friday, March 6, with Iowa Western Bowling, during a ceremony at Little Waite Lanes in Shenandoah.
Gray said stepping on the Council Bluffs campus in January made the decision easy for her.
“We went on a visit and the second I stepped on campus and started talking to everybody, it felt like home,” Gray said. “I felt like I already knew a lot about it since my brother went there but it really does feel like home.”
Gray said her bowling career started at a very young age.
“My grandma used to bowl,” Gray said, “and then I got my dad to start bowling. When I first started it was fun and then in got into our youth leagues and saw that I was actually pretty good and should continue this. Then, when I got into high school, my freshman year, I was on varsity. Since then, I feel like I have been growing the coaches that I have and they have helped me a lot.”
Gray is a three-time individual state qualifier and was part of two state teams. She called her Shenandoah bowling career, “a joy and a blast.”
“It was amazing with all the different seniors in past years,” Gray said. “We have always had a different setup and a different team every year, but it’s truly been fun with everybody supporting me.”
Gray has also been a state qualifier in tennis at Shenandoah and called choosing between the two sports collegiately “pretty rough.”

“Bowling has just always been my number one,” Gray said. “I don’t think I have ever gone a day without wanting to go bowl or been in the bowling alley.”
Gray joins an Iowa Western team filled with local talent. Iowa Western’s entire roster for the current season is from either southwest Iowa or Omaha.
Academically, Gray wants to go into sports medicine or athletic training, which begins with Iowa Western’s Exercise Science program.

State committee approves Shenandoah's move to Western Iowa Conference
Bryan Clark
The final hurdle has been cleared, and Shenandoah is officially moving to the Western Iowa Conference for the 2026/27 school year.
A newly-formed state conference realignment committee had to give the final approval and with that recently approved, Shenandoah makes the move to the WIC, as does Red Oak. Elsewhere in the Hawkeye 10 Conference, Lewis Central officially moves to the Missouri River Conference and Carroll joins the Hawkeye 10 from the Raccoon River Conference.
“We are looking forward to the move and are pleased with the decision made by the conference realignment committee,” Shenandoah officials said in a Friday release. “We believe joining the Western Iowa Conference will provide positive opportunities for our students and programs moving forward.”
Shenandoah is an original member of the Hawkeye 10 and, in the release, wanted to thank the conference members for “many years of competition, sportsmanship and shared experiences. We wish only the best to the schools that will continue as members of the Hawkeye 10.”
This is the first change in Hawkeye 10 membership since St. Albert joined the league in 2012. Hawkeye 10 Conference officials said in a release that they appreciate the contributions of the three schools exiting the conference and look forward to a new-look league starting this fall.
“These schools have been tremendous members of the Hawkeye 10, and their contributions to the conference’s competitive tradition are deeply valued,” Hawkeye 10 officials said. “At the same time, we are excited to welcome Carroll and look forward to the new rivalries and opportunities that lie ahead for our student-athletes, coaches and communities.”
Hawkeye 10 officials added that additional scheduling details and conference alignment information for the 2026/27 school year will be released later.
Clarinda continues as a member of the conference, joined by Atlantic, Carroll, Creston, Denison, Glenwood, Harlan, Kuemper and St. Albert.
Shenandoah officials say that most scheduling for the 2026/27 school year is complete and can be found on Shenandoah’s Bound page. Further information about conference alignment will be shared as the transition continues.
Shenandoah and Red Oak join AHSTW, Logan-Magnolia, Missouri Valley, Riverside, Treynor, Tri-Center and Underwood in the WIC.
