Steve and Lori Holt, Sidney Rodeo Parade Grand Marshals
Sidney Rodeo
Steven and Lori Holt have been named the Grand Marshals for the 2026 Sidney Iowa Championship Rodeo Parade.
Steven moved to Sidney in 8th grade and graduated from Sidney High School in 1964. He joined the URA Rodeo Circuit where he rode bulls and became a rodeo clown. He performed as a rodeo clow for Little Britches Rodeos from 1978 to 1983. He retired in Arizona in 2009.
Lori grew up in Hamburg and graduated from Hamburg High school. She worked several jobs in Southwest Iowa and Southeast Nebraska before moving to Arizona.
Steven and Lori were married in 2013 and returned to Sidney in 2014. The marriage brought two families together which grew to five children, 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Both take pride in their home, families and community and volunteer at the rodeo each year.

The Iowa State Fair returns Aug. 13-23 filled with 11 days of big concerts on the Grandstand, huge animals, blue ribbons, sculpted butter cows and new foods.
To celebrate America's 250th birthday, the fair features a patriotic "Fair Spirit" theme that includes a massive 250-flag display, a "Spirit of '76" historical exhibit, nightly drone shows and special events.
Fans of eating food on a stick, giant turkey legs and Bauder's ice cream treats can gird their diets for the 84 new dishes debuting at the 2026 Iowa State Fair.

Fremont County deputies arrest 51-year-old for sexual abuse of children

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office arrested a 51-year-old man July 2 on a variety of sex crimes.
The man — who formerly lived in Hamburg and was living in Nebraska City, Nebraska — was arrested following a "lengthy investigation into a reported sexual assault that occurred in Hamburg in February 2026," according to a news release issued Monday.
"During the course of the investigation, Fremont County investigators identified additional juvenile victims, with incidents allegedly dating back to January 2025," the release states.
The man, whom The Nonpareil is not naming due to the nature of the allegations, was arrested on suspicion of incest, lascivious acts with a child, third-degree sex abuse with a child victim, and third-degree sex abuse with a child victim related by blood.
The man appeared before a 4th Judicial District magistrate for an initial appearance and is being held at the Fremont Conuty Jail on a $45,000 cash-only bond.

Fremont County deputies arrest fan for eluding on way to Kansas City for World Cup

Fremont County law enforcement arrested a Colombian citizen visiting the United States for the World Cup on July 3 after he fled from a deputy along Interstate 29 for about 10 miles.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office's K9 unit initiated a traffic stop about 1:25 a.m. after clocking a 2026 Hyundai Elantra traveling southbound on Interstate 29 at 90 mph — 20 over the speed limit, according to a news release issued Monday.
"When deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver—later identified as Nestor Segura, a Colombian citizen visiting the United States for the FIFA World Cup—failed to yield and continued driving at a high rate of speed," the release stated.
After about a 10-mile pursuit, deputies used a stop stick tire-deflation device to force the Elantra to stop. Segura, a 33-year-old from Bogata, Columbia, was taken into custody without further incident, the release states.

Segura told deputies under questioning that he could not hear the siren and believed motorists were not required to pull over if only the lights were visible on the cruiser. He was booked into the Fremont County Jail on charges related to excessive speeding and eluding law enforcement.
Segura posted a $1,000 cash bond to be released.
"His release allowed him to travel down to Kansas City just in time to witness the Colombian National Team secure a 1-0 victory over Ghana, successfully advancing his home country to the World Cup Round of 16," the release states.
Columbia fell 4-3 in a shootout Tuesday against Switzerland after a scoreless draw in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Iowa Democrats and Republicans gain voters, as independent voters decrease

The Iowa Democratic and Republican parties both gained voters over the past month, while the number of voters with no party affiliation dropped significantly.
According to data from theIowa Secretary of State’s office, the Democratic Party gained more than 27,000 registered voters from June to July, bringing the total number of active Democratic voters in Iowa to 527,675. Despite Democratic gains, Republicans still hold a strong statewide advantage in voter registration with 711,587 active voters, gaining more than 17,000 registered voters over the past month.
The largest change in the state's voter registration data occurred among voters affiliated with no party, as the number of registered independent voters decreased by more than 32,000. As of July 1, there are 555,309 active independent voters in Iowa.
“I think part of what’s going on is that people changed their registration to reflect a party preference so they could vote in the party primary,”Karen Kedrowski, an Iowa State University political science professor and Carrie Chapman Catt Center director, said. “These are not really new voters. They’re probably independents who lean Democratic or Republican and changed their party registration to be able to vote in the primary.”
Kedrowski said that in recent years, the number of registered Republican voters have remained constant, the number of independent voters has gone up and the number of registered Democrats has gone down.
Kedrowski said the increase in Democratic registrations appears consistent with national trends, which she said reflect heightened motivation among Democratic and left-leaning voters opposed to President Donald Trump’s policies.
“There’s just a lot more excitement about participating in the election on the part of Democratic voters,” Kedrowski said. “They’re highly mobilized because they’re largely unhappy with what’s happening with the administration.”
Kedrowski said that it is extremely difficult to predict election results based on monthly data trends, but the excitement among Democrats could lead to the party making gains in Iowa, with the state returning to its “purple” roots, meaning a state that votes for both Republicans and Democrats closely.
“It’s definitely worrisome for Republicans because it shows there’s going to be momentum for the Democrats,” Kedrowski said. “Instead of seeing this as the Democrats becoming ascendant in Iowa, it might be more Iowa returning to being a swing state.”
Kedrowski cautioned that monthly voter registration alone does not predict election outcomes.
The voter registration figures reflect only “active” voters.According to Iowa Code 48a,voters who do not participate in one or two consecutive general elections will be labeled as “inactive,” but can still participate. If a voter misses three general elections, their voting status will be “canceled,” and the person would have to reregister.
