Lukus Major and Jacob McGargill won tournament championships Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Blair Border Brawl, and three more Mustangs finished second.
As a team, the Mustangs finished third in the eight-team event, featuring four Iowa schools and four Nebraska schools. Two Nebraska schools in Beatrice and Millard West beat Shenandoah’s 144.5 points. Beatrice scored 233.5 and Millard West 166. There were three teams within 10 points of the Mustangs.
McGargill stayed undefeated on the season with three technical falls in pool play at 165 pounds. He then pinned Blair’s Landry Larsen in the first period before earning a 7-1 win over Millard West’s Ben McAllister, last year’s fifth-place winner at the Nebraska Class A State Championships.
Major won all five of his matches to take the championship at 157. He pinned all three of his pool play opponents and then beat Millard West’s Caleb Washington in the semifinals. Major ended the day with a win by first period fall over Brock Weddle of Nebraska City.
Hayden Roush, Tyler Babe and Will Berning were runners-up on the day for Shenandoah.
Roush lost twice to Blair’s Landon Bernasek, 17-11 in pool play and 10-5 in the championship match at 144. Roush won his three matches by fall, including a second period pin of Beatrice’s Finley Omar in the semifinals.
In a round-robin bracket at 175, Babe won his first four matches, three by first period fall and one by a 16-10 decision over Wyatt Loftis of Blair. Babe then dropped a 14-2 major decision to Millard West’s David Washington.
Berning opened with three wins at 285, one by fall and two by decision. Berning pinned Logan-Magnolia’s Grady Brix in the semifinals before losing by fall to Gavyn Rhoden of Beatrice in the final.
Landon Fuller was third at 215 for the Mustangs. He split two matches in pool play before losing by fall to last year’s third-place winner at the Nebraska Class B State Tournament, Blaise Baughman of Blair, in the semifinals. Fuller responded with a pin in the third-place match.
Cater Wooten and Blake Burdorf both placed fourth for the Mustangs with Wooten winning two matches at 113 and Burdorf winning one at 150.
Shenandoah’s Taylor Dickerson won three matches, placing fifth at 190 while Hayden Dukes won one match and placed seventh at 157.

Alyssa Dowling returned to the lineup Saturday and led the Sidney girls basketball team in scoring but the Cowgirls fell 53-23 at Riverside.
The Class 2A No. 13 Bulldogs improved to 8-1 with the win, their eighth in a row.
Riverside led 13-3 after the first quarter, 28-12 at halftime and 40-20 after the third period of play.
Sydney Somers and Sophia Fenner led the Bulldogs with 12 points each.
Dowling scored eight points and added five rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks for the Cowgirls, who fell to 2-5 with the loss.
Addy Foster, Ashlyn Hayes and Kaelynn Hale added three points each for Sidney with Foster recording five rebounds, three steals and two assists and Hale two rebounds.
Alyssa Melvin, Czandrya Morgan and Addy Jimeson all had two points for Sidney. Morgan secured four rebounds, Melvin finished with three and Jimeson ended with two steals. Chloe Clark recorded three steals.

Carter Jorgenson scored 12 points to lead Sidney boys basketball but three Riverside athletes scored in double figures and 10 found the scoring column in a 77-24 Bulldog win Saturday at Riverside High School.
Riverside led 21-5 after the first quarter, 45-10 at halftime and 67-16 after three quarters of play.
Jorgenson’s 12 points included three 3-pointers. He added two rebounds. Aiden Stenzel finished with eight points and seven rebounds for the Cowboys, who fell to 2-5 with the loss.
Riverside improved to 7-2 with the win, paced by Peyton Amdor’s 20 points.
Joseph Lutz had Sidney’s other four points. Calvin Johnson recorded four rebounds, and Will Hobbie and Zach Boyd added two rebounds each with Boyd also contributing two assists.
