SHENANDOAH — An 11-0 fourth quarter run brought the Shenandoah girls basketball team within two, but the Fillies scored just one point from there in a 48-41 home loss Friday, Jan. 2, against Atlantic.
In the 2026 opener for both teams, the Trojans were able to pull away a bit in the third quarter and then hold on down the stretch for the Hawkeye 10 Conference win.
“There were a lot of little things we didn’t execute on, offensively and defensively,” Shenandoah head coach Jon Weinrich said. “We have a couple seniors that played really well, played hard and we matched them. We got it into the fourth quarter and did a lot of good things. We gave up too many easy points underneath, though, and didn’t execute some of our easier chances.”
After a fast-paced first quarter that ended with the Fillies in front 15-14, the second quarter was much slower with just 15 combined points, and the score was tied at 22 going into halftime.
Atlantic scored the final eight points of the third quarter and added the first basket of the fourth quarter on a Makenna Schroeder 3-pointer to lead 42-29 with 7:02 to play in the game.
Shenandoah battled back, however, scoring the next 11, the first four and final three coming from Kalyn Scamman and the Fillies trailed 42-40 with 2:48 still showing on the clock.
Atlantic answered with Brynn Lamp scoring inside just 22 seconds later and, from there, the score stayed at 44-40 until a pair of Peyton McLaren free throws with 27 seconds to play.
Lamp and Katrina Williams, Atlantic’s top two post players, who are listed at an even 6 foot, and 5-foot-11, combined for 27 points with Williams leading the Trojans with 15. Weinrich said his team’s interior defense against the taller Trojans simply wasn’t good enough.
“We need to be more physical,” Weinrich said. “I thought Addie Estes did a good job. Katrina has played underneath for a long time and did a nice job. It seemed like our help side and our backside defense wasn’t there. We just gave up too many shots underneath.”
Scamman’s 22 points led the Fillies. She added seven rebounds. Estes and Sloane McGinnis evenly split the other four points in the fourth quarter run and Weinrich said his team simply made shots to get back into the game.
“We got a couple nice bounces there and made some shots,” Weinrich said. “We finally made some changes on defense that clogged up the middle a bit more and took away some easy passes. Coaching was a big problem (Friday). We just need to do a couple little things a little bit better and a little bit more often.”
Ava O’Rourke added five points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the Fillies while Estes and McGinnis both had four points. Estes tallied five rebounds and McGinnis finished with three Seniors Callie Bebout and Abbey Dumler recorded three points each. Dumler brought down six rebounds and Bebout added two.
Besides Williams’ 15 and Lamp’s 12, Schroeder added 10 for the Trojans, who improved to 5-5 on the season and 3-2 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference.
Shenandoah fell to 7-3 with the loss, 1-3 in conference play. Weinrich said, going forward, his team is simply looking to improve.
“We had a pretty good first half,” Weinrich said, “but we know we’re going to be in a dogfight for every Hawkeye 10 game. There aren’t any games that we can circle as for sure wins and there aren’t any games we don’t feel we can get. We’re just taking it one game at a time and trying to execute.”
