Shenandoah’s Simon Hennings will compete at a national track and field meet next week.
Hennings qualified for the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships, with a runner-up finish in the discus and a fifth-place finish in the shot put at the Region 8 qualifying meet in Gretna, Nebraska Saturday, July 11. Both events came in the 17-18 year-old division.
A top five finish in a regional event qualifies the individual or relay team to the national meet, which tacks place Monday, July 27 – Sunday, Aug. 2, at Falcon Stadium in Norwalk, California, a suburb of Los Angeles.
Hennings’ top throw in the discus at the regional meet was 161 feet, 8 inches, more than four feet off his high school personal best from this past season, which saw him qualify for the state meet and the Drake Relays. His top throw came on his second. That was good enough as he was unable to complete a clean throw in the finals.
Hennings’ fifth-place mark in the shot put of 49-0.25 came on his fifth of six throws to vault him from sixth place to third, bettering his previous best of the competition by nearly two feet. He settled for fifth, the final spot to qualify for nationals, with a throw more than three feet better than his best throw of the spring season.
Hennings competes in the shot put at 8 a.m. local time Wednesday, July 29, and in the discus at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 30.
