Shenandoah Boys Tennis celebrates record-breaking season

The Mustangs were a state tournament team and won the Hawkeye 10 Conference, Atlantic and Shenandoah Tournaments.

Luke Daoust was named the Team MVP while Matt Holmes (Most Improved), Levi Rystrom (Sportsmanship) and Josef Walker (Rookie of the Year) earned the other team awards.

Ryan Lawrence and Lucas Sun didn’t lose a match all season while Teagan Brunk set the school record for career matches won, finishing with 117. Sun also reached the 100-win plateau for his career, finishing right at 100.
All six Mustangs who played a majority of the season in the varsity lineup: Brunk, Daoust, Sun, Holmes, Lawrence and Rystrom, all broke the school record for matches won in a season with the previous record being 32 set last year by Brunk and Daoust. Daoust now holds the record with 39.

Shenandoah city golf champions crowned

Three of the four divisions of the city championship matches were played on Thursday afternoon, July 23. In the men's scratch division, Jay Soderberg repeated his 2025 title with a 2&1 victory over Andy Dinges. In the ladies division, young Sarah Pickens knocked off the 2024 and 2025 champ Lori Carlson also by a 2&1 score. And in the handicap division, Trent Blackman repeated his 2025 title with a 5&4 win over Shane McHenry. Congratulations to Jay, Sarah, and Trent on their 2026 titles! The senior division final match will pit Darin Pease against Joe Martin and was scheduled to be played on Monday, July 27.
The Page County Ryder Cup matches were played on Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19 in very hot and humid conditions. Teams from the Clarinda Country Club and the Shenandoah Golf Course competed against each other. Saturday at the Shenandoah Golf Course, two-man teams played alternate shot and best ball matches against each other. Clarinda enjoyed an 8.5-to-7.5-point lead after day one. Sunday at the Clarinda Country Club, singles matches were contested. The Clarinda squad again came out on top by an 11-to-5-point margin. So, the final result was a 19.5 to 12.5 Clarinda victory over the Shenandoah team. Congratulations to both teams for continuing this competitive Ryder Cup tradition!
The second Bob Longman Memorial Youth Golf Tournament this season was held on Wednesday morning, July 22. Here are the winners of the boys and girls age brackets:
8 and under girls – Aubree Rice
11 and under girls – Emma Michaelson
8 and under boys – Cooper Weinrich
11 and under boys – Everett Furst
14 and under boys – Blake Burns
Youth golf camps have been held on Friday mornings during June and July. 60 boys and girls participated in the six weeks of camp. Thanks go out to the many volunteers who assisted with the instruction of the next generation of golfers!
Upcoming events at the SGC include: 1) First Wednesday of the month men's stag on August 5. It's nine holes of golf in the evening followed by a meal at the Elm Street Grill. 2) Booster Club golf outing on Saturday afternoon, August 8.
The signup sheet for the two-day two-man tournament on Saturday and Sunday, August 15-16 is out in the pro shop and has very few time slots left! If you haven't already done so, call the pro shop at (712) 581-9057 to reserve a tee time and cart (if necessary).
