Shenandoah to host substate team tennis tournament

The Shenandoah boys tennis team is likely to host a substate final for the third year in a row, and this year they’ll be expected to win and advance to the state tournament.
Clarinda is part of the four-team field that will be in Shenandoah Wednesday, May 20, to determine the Class 1A Substate 1 champion.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association released substate team brackets Friday, May 8 for both classes. The top 32 teams in each class qualify for the team postseason. There are eight sites in both classes with four teams at each site. The substate champion qualifies for the State Team Tennis Tournament June 2-3 in Pella.
Shenandoah hosts the Substate 1 Tournament with all Hawkeye 10 Conference teams in the field. The Mustangs and Red Oak square off in a semifinal at 9 a.m. while Clarinda and St. Albert meet in the other semifinal, also at 9 a.m. in Shenandoah. The two winners advance to the final, scheduled later that day for 12 p.m. The winner of that dual advances to the state tournament.
The Mustangs lost in the substate final each of the last two years, both at home, to Boone and North Polk.
The Mustangs beat Red Oak, Clarinda and St. Albert, all by 9-0 scores, earlier this season.
